More than 5,000 Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots of all ages and backgrounds gathered on Sunday 10 Sept 2000 at Ledra Palace hotel in the buffer zone to send the message that the two communities of Cyprus can and should live together.

Ministers, politicians, ordinary men and women, children and teenagers gathered for the "Festival of Mutual Understanding", organised by four Greek Cypriot and three Turkish Cypriot parties under the auspices of the Slovak embassy, taking advantage of the rare occasion they have to meet, talk and enjoy themselves listening to Greek and Turkish music.

The "Festival of mutual understanding" was organised by four Greek Cypriot parties (left-wing AKEL, right-wing DISI (Democratic Rally), EDI (United Democrats) and KISOS (Sosial Democrats Movement) and three Turkish Cypriot parties (Communal Liberation Party, Patriotic Union Movement and Republican Turkish Party). Organisers believe that this is only the beginning of a series of such events.

In this section peace-cyprus.org hosts a series of exclusive photographs from the event and a short video by Adonis Florides.
