Nilgün Güney was born in 1952 in Nicosia, Cyprus. Her mother, Tomris Güney, is a retired primary school teacher and her father, İsmet Güney, is a prominent painter, teacher of art, a graphic designer, and a photographer.

N. Güney, graduated from Lycee, Nicosia in 1970 and went to Turkey to study fine arts. In 1976 she graduated from Fine Arts Academy, Mimar Sinan University, İstanbul, with an M.A degree and returned to Cyprus.

She is working as a secondary school art teacher. She has a daughter and a son

For N. Güney, year 1989 was an important and buisy year; she became involved with ceramics and at the same time she started writing short stories. Her stories were published in several literary magazines. She also took part in a bicommunal ‘Raku’ workshop. It was this year that she was appointed to the newly opened State Fine Arts Secondary School as a full time teacher. She teaches art, art history, and graphics. Also it was the year when she had her first short story book published. She designed her own book cover.
