People's Petition #1

Drafted by Peace-Cyprus.Org

This month marks the twenty-sixth aniversary of the events which led to the division of Cyprus. These twenty six years have seen the ethnic division of the Cypriot people and their denial of access to the "other part" of their island. The ongoing problem, lack of communication and the chauvinist propaganda on both sides has caused an estrangement of the Cypriot people. A generation has grown up without knowing each other and without seeing the other part of their homeland. The economic burden placed on both communities due to a constant arms race and lack of stability is also immense. We, the undersigned people, demand and require, on the twenty sixth year of the division of Cyprus:

1) A peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem under the auspices of the United Nations.
2) A complete demilitarization of the island
3) A solution which will guarantee the independence, territorial integrity and unity of a bicommunal bizonal Federal Repulic of Cyprus against any kind of union, partition or secession.
4) A solution based on equality of all Cypriots on all levels.
5) The restoration of human rights for all Cypriots according to universal norms.
6) Taking necessary steps towards a rapid accession of Cyprus into the European Union.

We furthermore demand that the following measures be taken to ensure the rapid establishment of the above goals:

1) An end to chauvinist propaganda in both communities.
2) Lifting of all limitations in bi-communal gatherings and communication.
3) Minimization of the influence of the military and the "motherlands" and the acknowledgement of the right of the Cypriot people for self-government.
