peace-cyprus.org on events of September 11th, 2001

We, the members of peace-cyprus.org, share the pain and suffering of the people who were effected by the events of September 11th in the USA. Indiscriminate killing of civilians is not acceptable under any conditions be it practiced by individuals, organizations or governments. There is no justification for it under any condition, any ideology.

We stress that it is important to deal with terrorism through international collaboration and by increasing the power of international law and legal bodies. Waging armed warfare against countries and/or organizations is not a method to solve terrorism and end suffering of the common people. Human rights, freedoms and democracy should be furthered in all parts of the world.

All States especially including USA and Europe should invariably refrain from supporting violent organizations, states and illegal activities such as drug dealing, money laundering and arms trafficing.

Our work in building peace in Cyprus is not isolated from the rest of the world. We refuse to sit back and watch the reactions to these events. We therefore, categorically refuse retaliation in the form of a war waged by the USA or by an international force.

We also strongly oppose the racism and xenophobia, especially directed towards the Muslims and Middle Easterners which has been on the rise since the tragic events. We stress the importance and urgency of dealing with all forms of racism worldwide

One is too many of a victim, 6000 is 6000 too many. We wish for a future where a culture of tolerance and peace replaces that of violence and hatred.

We realize that peace is a global phenomenon and there can be no real peace anywhere unless there is peace everywhere. We therefore ask all those supporting peace in Cyprus to take action for world peace by joining the global anti-war movement.
